Shahine appeals massive legal costs
MEMBER OF Parliament for North East St Ann Shahine Robinson is appealing the $15.3 million in legal costs she has been ordered to pay in the dual-citizenship case against her.
She is asking the Court of Appeal to reduce the amount on the grounds that it is too high.
The appeal is set for hearing on June 1.
In the meantime, lawyers representing elector Manley Bowen, who had filed the election petition against Robinson, filed a counter-appeal on the grounds that they should get the $19 million they had submitted for indemnity and legal costs.
After several days of hearings, Registrar of the Supreme Court Rosemarie Harris on April 14 reduced the bill to $15.3 million.
Bowen had contended that Robinson had American citizenship when she was nominated for the September 2007 General Election. She was later ousted from her parliamentary seat. She renounced her United States citizenship and was re-elected following a by-election in the North East St Ann constituency in December last year.
