FROME, Westmoreland:

A 10-year-old student of Sir Clifford Campbell Primary School in Westmoreland was killed in a traffic crash Tuesday night.

The boy, Nicholas Johns, and his 14-year-old friend, André Sprat, both of Ricketts River in Frome, were riding separate bicycles in the direction of George's Plain around 7:30 p.m. when they were hit from their bicycles by two Toyota Corolla motor cars.

The Frome police, who are carrying out the investigations, theorise that one of the cars hit the youngsters from behind and they landed on the other vehicle.

Johns sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot, while Sprat was rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

Samantha Dennisur, mother of the deceased boy, was in a sad mood the morning after the tragedy.

"Not even five minutes before he passed through the house and the next thing me hear is that him dead," she said.

Dennisur said she was surprised by the news of her son's death because he normally would go to his cousins who live close by.

"He was jovial, outspoken, loving and caring and everyone will miss him," Dennisur said.

The drivers of the two vehicles, Clifford Lewis and Chevard LaTouche, who fled the scene but were later picked up by the Frome police, have been arrested. The police had not laid charges at press time.
