Rifle caution! Police instructed not to take rifles in schools
THE POLICE High Command has reminded members of the force who are issued with rifles and sub-machine guns to avoid taking them into crowded areas such as schools, businesses and places of entertainment.
At the same time, Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington said detectives and other plain clothes police personnel, including those off duty who are permitted to carry a firearm, should ensure their weapon is concealed in public places.
Ellington, who issued the reminders in the weekly Force Orders, said the practice of carrying rifles into places of business could increase the risks to both the police and civilians.
In addition, he said police personnel issued with rifles and sub-machine guns should ensure that they carry them in a safe position and conduct all the necessary safety checks.
"At no time should weapons be pointed at nearby persons," the Commissioner stressed.
He also warned that no live round should be carried in the breach and said a report must be written each time the weapon is removed from its holster, whether or not it is discharged.
