Three witnesses have so far testified at the trial of the two policemen charged with the murder of the son of dancehall artiste, Spragga Benz.

The Crown, represented by Meridian Kholer, deputy director of public prosecutions, is alleging at the in camera trial before the 12-member jury that 17-year-old Carlton Grant Jr was unarmed when he was fatally shot on August 23, 2008.

Constables Audley Lawrence and André Hare are charged with the murder. They are on bail in the sum of $300,000 each, with sureties.

It is alleged that on the day of the incident, Grant and another young man were riding a bicycle in downtown Kingston when they were stopped by the police. The men were told to run, and while running the police allegedly fired shots at them. Grant was fatally shot.

Police reports were that Grant and another man were riding a bicycle along Church Street in downtown Kingston, when the police stopped them. The police said Grant pulled a gun and fired at them, and they returned the fire.

The policemen are being represented by attorneys-at-law Valerie Neita-Robertson and Carolyn Reid-Cameron.

Supreme Court judge Horace Marsh is presiding at the trial, which continues today in the Home Circuit Court.
