'Break JPS' monopoly'

GOVERNMENT SENATOR Dennis Meadows has joined the list of persons calling for an end to the Jamaica Public Service Company's monopoly.

Meadows, in a motion yesterday, called on the Senate to consider and recommend that the Government and the Opposition arrive at consensus to engage the light and power company with a view to breaking its monopoly.

He also said the Government should review existing legislation to ensure competition in the generation and distribution of electricity.

The Senator, whose Jamaica Labour Party had dismissed a suggestion from Opposition Spokesman on Energy Phillip Paulwell that Jamaica consider nuclear power as part of its energy mix, said he wanted that avenue to be vigorously pursued.

The licence of the Jamaica Public Service as the country's sole distributor of electricity expires in 2020.
