Efforts by a team from the Transport Authority and the police to seize a motor car they claimed was being operated as a robot taxi almost got ugly this morning, as the driver of the vehicle was determined to prevent the seizure.

The Transport Authority-police team broke the one-way on East Street to block the vehicle being driven by Errol Carby.

They claimed they had witnessed him picking up and letting off passengers while collecting fares.

But Carby was adamant that he was giving a ride to friends.

He placed his body between his motor car and the wrecker which had been called by the Transport Authority team.

With tension high and neither the motorist nor the Transport Authority team seemed ready to back down, Deputy Superintendent Lena McBean of the Kingston Central Police Community Security and Safety Unit - who was passing - stopped and intervened.

Still angry

She was able to convince Carby not to resist the seizure of the vehicle but instead challenge the matter in court.

While he acted on the advice of McBean, Carby was obviously not pleased.

"This can't be fair because me never did a run no taxi and me just can't get justice," a still angry Carby said as he watched his motor car being taken away by the wrecker.
