New attorney general next week

Jamaica's new attorney general is to be named next week, Prime Minister Bruce Golding has said.

Golding, who has accepted the recommendation in the Manatt-Dudus commission report that the attorney general be separate from the justice minister, said the person appointed would not be a parliamentarian.

He said this announcement will come next week after he returns from Venezuela. The prime minister leaves the island for a CARICOM heads of government meeting in St Kitts and then heads to the PetroCaribe summit in Venezuela.

Golding says no to shifting NHT

Prime Minister BruceGolding has rejected the recommendation from the Public Sector Transformation Unit (PSTU) for the reassignment of the National Housing Trust from the Office of the Prime Minister to the housing ministry.

He has also refused to accept the suggestion that the Urban Development Corporation be transferred.

The PSTU had recommended that the entities be transferred to the current Ministry of Water and Housing in order to align related development functional areas under one ministry.

Golding gave no reason for his decisions to keep the agencies under his watch. He said the changes "minor in or of the totality of the recommendation but important in and of themselves to the recommendations that were made".
