Petrojam gives from the heart
Local oil refinery Petrojam recently donated a cheque valuing J$424,260 to the Rotary Club of St Andrew North.
The handover took place at The Wyndham Kingston hotel in New Kingston.
"We are pleased with this gesture from Petrojam," said David T. Brown, immediate past president of the Rotary club.
"The money will be used to procure and install two defibrillators - one at Petrojam's Marcus Garvey Drive refinery and the other at the Downtown Transportation Centre," he continued.
A defibrillator is a device used to administer a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the affected heart, and allows it to return to its natural rhythm.
Desmond McKenzie, mayor of Kingston and chairman of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, said the project was in tandem with his plans for the Water Lane-based transport facility.
"I want to extend my appreciation to the Rotary club and Petrojam for the donation. It couldn't have come at a better time as there are going to be some new arrangements at the Downtown Transport Centre, come September," the mayor said.
McKenzie said with plans to remove Portmore buses and others to the new bus park, the defibrillators would definitely come in handy.
In 2010, the Rotary Club of St Andrew North - under then president, David T. Brown - embarked on a project to install several defibrillators in public and office spaces. So far, Jamaica Broilers has given its commitment to install three at its various offices, while the Chinese Benevolent Society has earmarked one for its Hope Road office.
