THE CASE involving Patrick Powell, 50, the businessman charged with the murder of Kingston College student Khajeel Mais, 17, has been set for mention on September 16 in the Home Circuit Court.

Powell's lawyer, Patrick Atkinson, was expected to make a bail application yesterday, but he said he would wait until he was informed that the investigations have been completed.

Caroline Hay, senior deputy director of public prosecutions, said she was going to report on the status of the investigation within the next two weeks. Hay said she had given the defence copies of all the documents she received, but the forensic reports were still outstanding.

Powell is charged with murder, shooting with intent, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and failure to produce a firearm for inspection, in relation to the Mais case.

Khajeel Mais was shot dead on the night of Friday, July 1, when the driver of a BMW X6 allegedly opened fire on the taxi in which Mais was travelling after it bumped into the SUV.

Powell left the island for the United States a day after the killing.

He then returned on July 11, and surrendered to the police at the Norman Manley International Airport.
