FALMOUTH, Trelawny:
The Kelly Lawson Skills-Training Centre in Falmouth, sited on the grounds of the Falmouth United Church, is to reopen its doors this month.
The courses to be offered are level Two programmes in housekeeping and food preparation, which are primarily geared to the hospitality industry. The courses, which will now attract a cost, will be continued under the auspices of the Human Employment and Resource Training (HEART) Trust/National Training Agency (NTA) and the church.
Residents welcome the reopening as Falmouth is regarded as an emerging tourism hub with the region's largest cruise-ship pier, additional attractions, and linkage sectors that demand employees.
The Kelly Lawson Skills-Training Centre had been operating for close to 50 years. It came about as a result of the request made by Kelly Lawson to the church (formerly the Presbyterian) for it to construct a facility to train disadvantaged ladies in the art of home economics.
The church partnered with HEART Trust/NTA to offer the training, which was suspended last year.
