Grenada, which recently gave low-cost carrier, REDjet, permission to fly to the island, on Monday reaffirmed its support for regional airline LIAT.

"As minister for civil aviation, I have come to realise that despite all of the airlines we have travelling to our island, despite the fact that we have British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, Condor, Caribbean Airlines and recently, REDjet, without LIAT, we in the Caribbean would suffer greatly," Peter David said during the opening of a media-training workshop for young Caribbean journalists from Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St Maarten and Trinidad.

"We in Grenada, we in the Government of Grenada and as minister for civil aviation in Grenada, will do everything in our power and will work diligently with LIAT to ensure that LIAT continues to fly in the region," David said.

Earlier this month David announced that the Barbados-based low-budget airline REDjet would fly the Grenada skies from December.

"REDjet has applied, and we have granted approval to them through the air transport board. It has given that approval to REDjet. We believe the addition of all airlines to our fleet that fly to Grenada is good for our tourism industry," he said then.

The week-long media training workshop is sponsored by LIAT, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the Grenada Board of Tourism.
