Poetry: The beauty of nature

Published:Sunday | December 18, 2011 | 12:00 AM
The beauty of nature

I was destined to be the individual I am today

With every spot on my body and every mark on my face

I choose not to be caught up in anyone's embrace

Simply because chances are not to

be taken right now and it is my good grace

I try my best to ascertain where my inner being lies

Being pessimistic is not acceptable,

so even my worst days are filled with smiles

Natural things bring me to my utmost best

The misty green forests and the

sweet melody of the harp I possess

Let the wind blow through the light strands of my hair

Living so simply and yet I remain so high and fair

Secretive and conservative, I will always dwell

With God as my guide, my soul and heart I will never sell

I am under the stars when eve has arrived

I'll think about the best things and negativity, I will resist

You can shake my heart and fill my soul

I detest anything that comes across me bold

My eyes will see beyond any fallacious individual

But my love for everyone will be perpetual

With my love of nature and my veritable smile

This life will never end and for greatness I toil.

Strong black woman

The strength she possesses surpasses her knowledge

They say, 'you are strong' and she asks, 'how come?'

She feels weak, afraid, fragile and vulnerable

Yet persons say, 'I hope to be like you'

She wonders, 'Be like me?

Why ever would anyone want to do that?'

She sees her inadequacies and shortfalls

Yet you see her standing tall

In her mind is 'I cannot cope'

But one sees beyond that to strings of hope

She stands when others felt sure they would fall

She smiles despite nearly losing all

She desires to see herself through their eyes

Where I believe that would be a surprise

Amid the trials

She is still on the rise

The dream to step into that which is to be fulfilled in her

As she makes her mark on the future.

Tis the season

Tis the season for relatives to visit

those whom they have forsaken all year

Tis the season for debts to increase,

as buying new furniture paint and flowers

will never cease

Tis the season for the ailing to

consume that which they had earlier been forbidden to eat

Tis the season for accidents shoot-outs and thefts

for the vigilant eyes of criminals are at their best

Tis the season for bargains

music and lights

ham, turkey, cake and other sweet delights

Tis the season to sing, celebrate and be of good cheer

But for a change

Make this the season to treat the

lowly with care into the new year.

Exams!

Math, Language, Science

So many exams in alliance

You have to study hard

But remember to keep on your guard

Work on your concentration

With absolutely no hesitation

Then you will be satisfied

And your grades will not have to be kept classified.

Math

Maths is lots of fun

It nuh give you nuh bun

It's just like A, B, C

Except you count 1, 2, 3

I know you may be a math hater

But then we'll see you later

If you don't think math is fun

Ask Einstein, he was not dumb

Math is more than adding and subtracting

But quite different from acting

That is math in a bit

Take it or leave it

You just can't live without it.

Why Daddy, why?

I saw the candlelight

searched through the darkness

The figure's face reflected on the wall

It was not a stranger, neither was it a neighbour

It came closer

And closer

My heart grew larger

And larger

What was his intention?

Why is he coming closer?

And why is the silence getting louder?

Is that you, Daddy?

Stop! Stop! Please.

Don't take this gift from me

Not you, please let someone else

That is not my blood

Why Daddy, why?

Why do you have to take my innocence?

Why Daddy, why?

Like dandelion dust

The small pleasures of life are so wonderful

Like

A smile

Laughter

A song that pierces the soul

Family

Accomplishments

Confessions that set you free

Health

Animals

The sunrise and sunset

The rain and sunshine

Flowers

The beach

Starry nights

Fireflies

A meaningful conversation

The intensity of love

Friends

A first kiss

Dreams

Imagination

A hug

Contentment

Then something happens

That makes all your pleasures disappear

Like dandelion dust.

Perfect

Primped

Prepped

Manicured

Polished

Slicked

Powdered

Coordinated

Accessorised

Perfumed

Made up

Buttered

Concealed

Enhanced

Revealed

Faded

Glamourised

Yet

Still obscure

Still a fight

Diminishing esteem

Mind in tatters

Stability? Not a reality

Matters of the self

Assert themselves

All this hinged on the niche of acceptance

Exhaustion draws nigh as warfare escalates

The perfect is falling apart

Becoming unglued

Cracks widen

Chips fall

Strands fall to the floor

Where is the purpose?

What's the use?

How much more before?

Pedestal propped the perfect

The imminent abandonment looming near

No compromise to be reached.
