With the holidays here, what we all need is a bit more energy to accomplish that never-ending to-do list. Rather than reaching for an energy drink (which isn't all that healthy in the long run), consider these 10 steps to boost your energy levels and improve overall well-being, so you can really enjoy the holidays.

Energise your diet: Start your day with a heart-healthy breakfast, such as yoghurt, berries, whole-grain cereal, poached eggs and whole-grain toast. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to keep energy levels high.

Exercise regularly: Even if you feel tired, exercise will give you a boost rather than making you feel more tired. Take a walk or a bike ride or go swimming.

Get adequate sleep: Aim for seven to 10 hours a night. Sleep deprivation can increase your risk of cancer, heart disease and other chronic illnesses.

Manage stress: Stress is a major contributor to mental fatigue. Relaxation techniques help, as does exercise.

Drink plenty of water: Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue. The Institute of Medicine recommends women consume 2.7 litres of total water a day and men consume 3.7 litres.

Moderate your caffeine intake: High amounts of caffeine can raise levels of stress hormones, and caffeine consumed later in the day can affect sleep.

Go easy on alcohol: Too much alcohol can impair quality of sleep and interfere with deep sleep.

Moderate your sugar intake: While sugary foods give a temporary rush and burst of energy, those are followed by a rapid decline in blood sugar and fatigue.

Consider a multivitamin: The B vitamins and magnesium are particularly important for energy production.

Take time for yourself: Even if you have a busy day, try to carve out 15 to 20 minutes for yourself to do something enjoyable.
