Security Administrators Limited (SAL), the premier provider of maritime security locally, has appointed a new managing director - Captain George Reynolds.

Captain Reynolds, who previously served as Colonel Adjutant Quartermaster of the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF), has over 30 years experience in the military. He takes over from Captain John Ulett who retired in September.

With his military background, Captain Reynolds believes he is well suited for the job and aims to build on the contributions of Captain Ulett. Prior to joining SAL, Captain Reynolds served as assistant vice president for Security at the Port Authority of Jamaica. As Colonel Adjutant Quartermaster in the JDF, the experienced army man had principal responsibility for matters of finance, logistics, personnel and general administration.

SAL, which has an enviable track record in port security, changes guard at a time when Jamaica is expanding its port operations and is preparing for the changes that are to come from the expansion of the Panama Canal.

For Captain Reynolds, the road ahead is not daunting, as his years of experience have prepared him for the tasks ahead.

Throughout his career, Captain Reynolds has held various sea-going and shore-based appointments at the Coast Guard and in the wider JDF, including command of JDF Coast Guard patrol vessels; plans and special projects at the JDF headquarters; the JDF intelligence unit, and the position of inspector general.

He has served on secondment to the Ministry of Transport and Works, where he was involved in the development of the administrative and regulatory framework for the Maritime Authority of Jamaica. He also served as chairman of the CARICOM sub-committee for intelligence.

Captain Reynolds notes that under his leadership, SAL will focus on the personal development of team members and the expansion of specialised services to meet the security management needs of the industry.

Maintain and improve

"Port security is a very dynamic field. Those who wish to undermine or circumvent our systems are constantly developing new techniques, and as such, security personnel must remain abreast of such developments and be pro-active in devising appropriate countermeasures," Captain Reynolds said.

Another aim of the new managing director will be to maintain and improve SAL's partnerships and to strengthen the company's position as the firm of choice for maritime security services not only locally but regionally. He added that his endeavour is to improve SAL's visibility while developing customer oriented services.

He said his plan is to inculcate an ethos of 'ADAPT-ability' which focuses on: attitude, discipline, accountability, professionalism and trustworthiness.

Captain Reynolds holds a master of science degree in maritime administration and environmental protection and a diploma in human resources management.

He is the recipient of the Order of Distinction (Officer Class); First Bar to the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service (JDF) and the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service (JDF).

Captain Reynolds is a visiting lecturer to the World Maritime University and an adjunct lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. He serves on the boards of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica and Ports Management and Security Limited.
