Poetry (4)

Is it me?

Is it me - or somebody like me?

You said you needed a partner - a spouse

But are you sure it's me?

Are you sure you want a mood that changes faster than the weather?

Do you want one desperate for attention?

Are you sure it's me?

Can you handle someone not so sociable?

Can you handle the fear of intimacy, one who's full of uncertainty?

Are you sure it's me?

I suggest you go back to square one

Reconsider your 'answered prayer'

'Cause I don't think it's me

Ask me

As days go by

I sit here and wonder

Will you ever ask?

Or is it such a difficult task

Impatient

I grow, though I do not show

Deep within

I want you

And I know

You want me too

So ask me that question

'Cause my answer will be

Yes

You won't be out of line

For I will gladly be your Valentine

Language and all

Mi talk from mi heart

endless failya

countless start

Jamaica mi bawn

dutty skin

language and all

Yuh frown wen mi talk

Patois turn yuh aff

di tone, di rhythm

it raw

No Jamaica yuh bawn?

Yuh no proud at all

evident

in yuh language and all

The ill-fated trip

They embarked on the trip

With joy and expectancy

A trip meant for fact-finding

A mission designed

And geared towards academic development

But cruel natural elements

Had tailored a terrible fate

For the youngsters

The trip began

It went on

To the beach

Young boys lured by the elements

Went into the waters

Cruel fate struck

The boys drowned

The sea drowned students' joy

It drowned parents' hopes

Nature, why did you place

The good intentions of humans

At the bottom of the sea?

Jamaica, pray to God

To comfort the bereaved

To diminish the gloom

Of this tragic circumstance.

Don't give up

I refuse to surrender and prefer to lay low

As I am very much hardcore and won't allow

Whatever may be consequences that may follow

I shall take charge ahead and would like to grow

Because while some idle, I am getting ahead in life

I am no coward, never worry

Wet with sweat, to hard work I am so hooked

Yet it is reality, many live with constant fears

With few difficulties to get in or to get there

Many give up and lose hope while they shed tears

Every time I close my eyes

A sense of darkness fills my head

And the memory of that little child

So innocent, yet shot dead

I remember the sound of the gunshot

Mixed with the screech of her scream

And as the bullet pierced her forehead

Her gentle little spirit departed the scene

The thought of that innocent little girl

Painfully cut from this evil world

Plagued by the thought that on a warm summer day

I was the one who took her life away

A memory

The slight movement of the tree was the only sign

Then she was beside me, hand in mine

You and I are products of the perfect mind

You are in my dreams and you captivate my life

I enjoy waking up and seeing your beautiful smile

If something were to happen, I don't know what I would do

Just thinking about it brings forth a tear or two

I wonder why things happen so unexpectedly

I saw a friend two weeks ago and today he is six feet deep

I am sure he did not know you

I am sure he had plans of one day repenting at the front pew

But now he is a memory, gone too soon
