Hot off the grill
The annual Appleton All Jamaica Grill Off competition, which was held last Sunday, met the expectations of both the organisers, sponsors and patrons who converged on Hope Gardens. Weeks before, the more than 21 teams had been seasoning, marinating and firing up their grills to compete in the highly contested cook-off.
Cooks from various sectors of the society donned aprons and forgot the drizzle that threatened to douse many flames. They were ready to outdo last year's winners - The Western Grillers.
At the end of the day, however, the winners were not announced, although scorecards have been tallied, Kerry Bell, event manager, told Food.
Foodies, including many children, were not disappointed with either food or entertainment. The Cran Wata Kiddies was the main attraction for the children, while adults sampled the fare of everything grilled. There was lamb chops, pork, chicken sausages, and a variety of seafoods.
"Patrons absolutely loved the beef and pork," said Bell, adding that this years event was the biggest and definitely better than last year's.
Grill teams included Island Outlaws, Western Grillers, Jo Jos Jerk Pit and The Gleaner's Grill Team.
