A Golden deal
Christine Tyrell has been a long-standing franchise holder of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill with headquarters in New York and more than 130 outlets across North America.
Recently, she threw her doors open to host the launch of a business partnership between Golden Krust and Bigga, the soft drink giant owned by Wisynco Group of companies.
Bigga, a tropical soft drink blend, comes in a variety of flavours, including ginger beer, fruit punch, Jamaican kola, mango and pomegranate. Bigga will be sold as a combo with Golden Krust patties.
The launch at Starrette City Plaza took the form of a fun-filled day with patrons of Golden Krust streaming in for the usual fare.
"Our stores are heavily patronised by not only Jamaicans in the diaspora but Caribbean nationals and Americans with a taste for our spicy cuisine cuisine," Tyrell told Food on a tour of her outlet.
Apart from the ubiquitous patty, the Golden Krust menu features a delectable array of traditional Jamaican foods: Oxtail and beans, brown stew fish, curried chicken, jerk chicken, fried plantain, and steamed vegetables.
"While all our menu offerings delight our clients, the braised oxtail is a big hit," she told Food.
With the option of dining in or take out, the outlet which is brightly painted in hues of orange and yellow was abuzz with activities. According to vice-president of manufacturing and IT at Golden Krust, Omar Hawthorne, his United States-based Jamaican family business with head office in the Bronx is very successful, and has been serving the Caribbean North Americans since 1989.
His view was endorsed by Sharon Burrell Green of the Jamaican consulate in New York.
"Golden Krust is moving upwards, and it is fitting that this company forms the kind of business alliance it has just sealed with another strong Jamaican company."
Assembly woman Helene Eisten shared a similar view. '"Golden Krust serves as an important engine of our community. We want the company to stay in our neighbourhood, and to even open more locations," she said.
