WESTERN BUREAU:

Last Friday evening, a few friends of new government senator, attorney-at-law Sophia Frazer-Binns hosted a celebratory cocktail reception in her honour at the Mayfair Hotel in St Andrew.

Organised by Eastern St Andrew Member of Parliament André Hylton and Dollis Campbell, social secretary at the office of the prime minister. Frazer-Binns was lauded by her peers for her outstanding contribution to nation building.

In her response, the Norman Manley Law School graduate, who has been practising law for the last seven years, said she has always wanted to serve, and was heartened that the prime minister chose to recognise her work.

"My appointment is a commitment by our prime minister to young people. It shows she wants the involvement of young people in the country, who are being mentored by the people with experience, side by side," Frazer-Binns told Today.

At 35, she is one of the youngest senators, and one of four women serving as senators on the government benches.

The Westwood High School past student said she was really overwhelmed by the thought of her friends. "It shows the support that I have from my friends, who have shown their continued support of me."
