Man on car theft charge acquitted
WESTERN BUREAU:A St James man who allegedly stole a motor car last November was freed of the charge when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and made full restitution to the owner.
Roxroy Haughton, who was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and robbery with aggravation, had also been ordered by the court to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Allegations are that on November 1, 2012, Haughton drove off with the car in Rose Mount, St James, but crashed 150 yards away. He was held by residents and subsequently arrested and charged.
On Tuesday, clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie that full compensation had been made to the car's owner.
"The investigating officer told me that the complainant was compensated, so we will not be proceeding any further," said Malcolm.
RM Tie gave Haughton a stern warning to stay out of trouble, before dismissing the case.
"You will have to do things differently from now on. You may go, sir," the magistrate told Haughton.
