HOPEWELL, Hanover:The retirement celebration in recognition of the service of outgoing Hanover Resident Magistrate George Burton was held at the Round Hill Hotel in Hopewell recently.
The function was well attended by members of the legal fraternity in western Jamaica, who paid tribute to the retiring magistrate.
Resident magistrate for Hanover, Sandra Wong-Small, who was in attendance, also paid her respects to Burton.
"Your absence leaves a space that is very difficult to fill. By virtue of the time you have spent in the parish, you have become part of it. It is clear that Mr Burton has stamped his mark on Hanover. Sir, you will be surely missed," she said.
Also in attendance was Custos of Hanover, Dr David Stair, who brought greetings. Stair thanked Burton for his years of unfailing service to the legal system in Hanover, noting, in particular, that the resident magistrate was passionate about citizens seeking dispute resolution through mediation.
In his response, Burton thanked the organisers and attendees for their kind outpourings.
"It has blown my mind. I never thought that I would be among you auspicious persons to be so honoured. I have never seen anywhere as beautiful as Hanover. I mean that from the bottom of my heart," he said.
"Lucea reminds me of the old Jamaica I knew as a youngster. The people are wonderful, really gentle and homely. I couldn't imagine or wish for living elsewhere that is this comfortable. I have not left you. I will come back," he added.
