WESTERN BUREAU:The Jamaica Business Develop-ment Corporation (JBDC) and the Social Development Commission (SDC) hosted a joint economic and empowerment exposition last Thursday at the Lucea United church hall in Hanover in observance of Global Entrepreneurial Week.
SDC Hanover Parish Manager Mashario Bisasor told Western Focus that the event was staged in a bid to drive business development and economic enablement in the parish of Hanover by encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit and the building of community-based businesses.
"We are getting the community to come forward with their economic enablement projects that they have been doing, getting them exposed to the wider parish, and to business opportunities that may exist," Bisasor told Western Focus.
"What we hope to achieve is to get maximum exposure for the goods and services produced at the community level such as in Mt Peto, where they have the liquid curry and pineapple pepper sauces, and other condiments. We want people to see it, to know that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well within the parish, and that the parish can only move forward with this type of activity," he added.
OVERDUE COLLABORATION
JBDC business development officer for Hanover, Simone Morrison, told Western Focus that her organisation and the SDC collaborated to stage the event. Both entities were planning events of a similar nature for the same day.
"For us, an event like this brings out the importance of starting the business, highlights all the characteristics you would need to be a good business person, and as such, other agencies that are here made presentations which not only spoke about what they represent but how it all comes together when going into business," she said.
Entities which participated in the event were Fidelity Motors, the National Housing Trust, Jamaica National Small Business Loans, Hanover 4-H Clubs, Jamaica Bureau of Standards, Tax Administration Jamaica, and the Consumer Affairs Commission.
