Sheffield All-age School copped the Rockhouse Hotel's Green Challenge Quiz championship after defeating St Paul's Primary School 8-3 in the final, which was held at the Negril Branch Library last week Thursday.

Five schools participated in the competition, which was being staged for the fifth consecutive year. The other schools were the Westmoreland-based Negril All-Age and Mt Airy Primary schools, and the Harding Hall Preparatory School in Green Island, Hanover. Each team consisted of four competitors between the ages of nine and 12.

In addition to the championship trophy, the Sheffield All-age School team also won a trip for six to the Kool Runnings Adventure Park and $10,000 towards their school fund. St Paul's Primary School, which had taken home the trophy back in 2010, also took home the second-place trophy and won a trip to Dolphin Cove in Lucea and a $4,000 cash prize.

NEGRIL PLACES THIRD

Three-time winners Negril All-Age School took home the third-place trophy and also won dinners for six at the Pushcart Restaurant in Negril.

"The Green Challenge Quiz was started in 2009 when Rockhouse Hotel pursued achieving Green Globe certification," general manager of the Rockhouse Hotel, Charlotte Wallace, told Western Focus.

"One of the requirements was that we needed to promote education in the area of environmental awareness. We decided that as we already had a focus on children - through the Rockhouse Foundation - to gear our environmental education to the children, and this is where we formed the Green Challenge Quiz," Wallace said.

She added: "Environmental aware-ness is extremely important to Rockhouse. We are Green Globe-certified. Each year, we achieve Green Globe recertification by ensuring that we minimise the use of scarce resources and minimising waste. It is a very important part of the Rockhouse commitment. We have a commitment to our guests, of course, to our staff, to the community, and to the environment."

The associate sponsors of the competition were the Negril Environment and Education Trust, the Kool Runnings Adventure Park, Dolphin Cove, Sound Illusions, Dennis Eckart, and the Jamaica Library Service.
