WESTERN BUREAU:Students from five of Hanover's six high schools put their best foot forward in showcasing their artistic talents during the National Centre for Youth Development's Youth Skills Expo and Art Fair held at the Rusea's High School, Lucea.

The event was staged under the theme "Youth advocacy through arts: Wi a tun up di ting" and showcased students' artwork, needlework, woodwork, and other areas of the creative industries. Participating institutions were the Green Island, Rhodes Hall, Merlene Ottey, Hopewell, and Rusea's High schools.

Youth Empowerment Officer for Hanover, Donmarie Latouche, told Western Focus that she was satisfied that the event had met its objectives.

"This year, we had more support from external agencies. It was a good opportunity to reach young persons, many of whom are now aware of their skill sets, which can be used to create their own jobs in the future," she said.

According to Latouche, the Hanover Youth Skills Exposition was staged in a bid to promote entrepreneurship and capacity building for in-school youths as well as to motivate and to educate those who hoped to find employment opportunities outside the conventional means but who were without the relevant skill sets to accept entrepreneurship as a viable option to wealth creation.

External agencies which participated in the event were the University College of the Caribbean, the Hanover Health Department, HEART Trust/NTA, Sandals Resorts, the National Housing Trust, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Hanover Youth Council, the Hanover Youth Skills Development Group, and the Consumer Affairs Commission.
