Uptown drinking

1. Someone reminded us recently that alcoholism, like gambling, is becoming a serious problem in Jamaica. It is happening among the upper classes, whose choice of drink is not overproof, but wines and other spirits. The impact is said to be great on one particular profession.

$1 million trip!

2. The story is told of an academic administrator who blew a cool million on a recent overseas trip. And he didn't go to Australia - but obviously he was living large. Staff complain that they are denied the smallest of request for travel, which would ultimately benefit the organisation, on the basis that there is nothing in the budget. But a change is a coming, and many are rejoicing.

No showdown

3. So the ex-wife turned up at the function quite prepared to stare down the missis. However, she was greeted with such warmth that she simply returned the embrace. Those expecting a showdown were thoroughly disappointed.

Funeral drama

4. Funerals are usually filled with drama invariably involving baby mothers, but this one took the cake. The deceased had apparently left his spectacles at his baby mother's house. Dear wife searched high and low but couldn't find it so she substituted a worn pair. Along comes girlfriend at the funeral service. She walks up to the casket, passes baby over the body and then replaces the worn pair with the current one - she eases back and admires him then waddles to the back of the church. The silence was deafening.
