The St. Ann Health Department is reporting an increase in the number of leptospirosis cases in the parish.

According to the health department, six additional cases were discovered last month, which is four more than those reported in January.

Chief Public Health Inspector for St. Ann, Granville McKenzie said the health department is moving to increase its anti-leptospirosis drive especially in the north eastern section of the parish.

Mr. McKenzie said mapping of likely breeding sites for rats, which are the main carriers of the disease, is being done in preparation for a wide-scale eradication exercise.

He also disclosed that the St. Ann health department has organised a public meeting for March 20, to sensitise householders and business operators on the importance of helping to control the rat population.
