TAD to take tough action
The Tax Administration Department is warning that it will be taking strong action against persons who failed to meet the March 17 income tax deadline.
The Public Relations Director at Tax Administration Department, Meris Haughton said measures have been put in place to identify the delinquent individuals and businesses.
She said summonses would be issued to individuals who fail to file their income tax returns.
Ms. Haughton said more than 42,000 self employed persons and 11, 500 businesses have already filed their returns.
She also said this is a 35 percent increase over the number of persons who met the deadline last year.
Under the Income Tax Act, an individual can be fined $10,000 for each outstanding tax return or imprisoned for up to a year.
