Unions threaten JPS on reclassification issue

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) said it intends to arrive at a resolution to a long-standing reclassification issue with unions representing workers at a meeting tomorrow.

The unions have threatened that there could be disruptions at the power company if tomorrow’s meeting ends without a written agreement.

Corporate Communications Officer at the JPS, Ruthlyn Johnson said it is in the interest of the company and customers that the dispute is resolved speedily.

The unions are upset over the time it is taking the company to implement a job evaluation and compensation review.

Since April last year, an Oversight Committee comprising the union and JPS representatives has been working towards implementing the review.

The review is in keeping with a Court of Appeal ruling, which ordered that the company abide by a 2003 salary structure outlined by the Industrial Disputes Tribunal.
