Rice shortage affects Jamaica

The Government is now trying to identify how it will respond to the possible shortage of rice.



The Commerce Minister, Karl Samuda said the he is being briefed on the situation and will address the matter later today.



The Jamaica Rice Milling Company confirmed that the quota of rice from Guyana is not being met.



The Managing Director of the company, Derrick Nembhard said of the three expected shipments since the start of the current crop, only one has been received so far.



As a result, he said at present there is no Guyanese Rice at the mill.



Mr. Nembhard also said the delay in the shipment of rice from Guyana means that there could be a shortage.
