Portland residents protest

A demonstration by residents at Snow Hill in Portland has led to a halt in roadwork being carried out by a team assigned to Pihl Construction Company, the contractors of Highway 2000.



The residents are alleging that their counterparts in West Portland have secured jobs in various categories, while they have been ignored.



They are insisting that they should be allowed to carry out some of the work in East Portland, as opposed to persons who are not from the community.



A spokesperson for the group said the workers are determined to have their request heard and that their peaceful demonstration will continue until their concerns are addressed.



Another protestor said the workers are fed up with what they describe as the victimisation by the company’s management.



As a result of the protest, work has stopped on a section of the road at Split Hill, near Passley Gardens.



The irate protesters said that they have submitted applications to an office operated by Pihl Construction Company in Hope Bay along with the relevant documents, but they have not received any word from the company.
