Communications Director at the Transport Ministry, Reginald Allen is seeking to explain the Jamaica Urban Transit Company’s need for additional bus drivers.

Yesterday, the company placed newspaper advertisements for 400 bus drivers.

Some managerial positions were also advertised.

The company recently disclosed plans to lay off 400 conductors and conductresses.

Mr. Allen said the move by the company is part of its restructuring exercise and falls in line with international standards.

He said the additional drivers would be needed to complement the number of buses now being operated by the JUTC.

According to Mr. Allen 100 buses have been added to the fleet since the start of the year with plans to acquire at least another 100 by year end.

He said the drivers would also be needed to ensure the smooth operation of the shift system being run by the company.
