Condemned carcasses offered for human consumption
Public Health Inspectors in Montego Bay, St. James have seized and condemned 12 pig carcasses from a business establishment in the city.
The parish’s public health department said investigations revealed that the carcasses were being offered for sale without the required approval for human consumption.
Public Relations Officer at the Western Regional Health Authority, Clinton Pickering, said public health inspectors have been targeting food establishments in the parish since last month.
Mr. Pickering said within three weeks of the start of the drive, the public health services received 70 applications from persons seeking to have the required license.
The drive targets supermarkets, shops, restaurants and food shops and for certification, storage and solid waste management, which must conform to requirements of the Public Health Law.
Individuals selling food are also required to have a valid food handler’s permit.
The Public Health Department said in the event that a business operator fails to meet the required standards within the specified time, the establishment is closed until all requirements of the law are met.
