Driver gets reduced sentenced

A St. Elizabeth Truck Drive has succeeded in having the Court of Appeal set aside his manslaughter convictions.



Lloyd Brown , 58, of Black River St. Elizabeth was convicted in the Manchester Circuit Court on four counts of manslaughter in June 2004.



However the Court of Appeal has set aside those convictions and the six-year prison sentence.



It has instead substituted the convictions to the lesser offence of causing death by dangerous driving.



Brown will now have to serve six months in prison or pay a fine of $1 million.



The driver who was employed to the Silica Mining and Engineering Company in St Elizabeth was convicted for manslaughter following a motor vehicle crash on the Winston Jones Highway in Manchester in June 1998.



It was reported that the truck he was driving swerved across the road and collided with a trailer.



The crash resulted in the deaths of Angela Jones, Isolyn Bennnet, Brenton Channer and Hamato Jackson who were travelling in the trailer.
