Jamaican soldier killed in Afghanistan

The United States Department of Defence has reported that a Jamaican-born soldier and three others have been killed in Afghanistan.



Andrew Seabrooks, 36, a Sergeant, who lived in South Ozone Park in Queens, New York was killed on Saturday by a roadside bomb and small arms fire in Kandahar, Afghanistan.



Yesterday, family members said Seabrooks, a mechanic with the New York National Guard, had volunteered to serve in Iraq four years ago, to earn extra money when the family’s house faced foreclosure.



Seabrooks was in Afghanistan about six months and was scheduled to return home next month for a week.



Defence Department officials said Seabrooks was killed, along with the three other troopers, when their vehicle came under attack.



Seabrooks joined the army 17 years ago and served as head of his household after his mother died in 2005.
