BAJ requests three months

The executive of the Bakers Association of Jamaica (BAJ) asked the Bureau of Standards for three months to have the correct labels placed on all baked products.

The request is in response to reports by the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) that a number of bakeries have labeled their products as Whole Wheat, when the element is not a major ingredient.

The FTC said in some instances although the packaging is boldly labeled Whole Wheat, a careful look at the fine print, reveals that the major ingredients range from baking flour and enriched flour, to white flour.

Yesterday, the executive of the association met with members of the Bureau of Standard to discuss the issue.

Chairman of the association, Gerry Chambers, said all members of the association must abide by the laws governing the industry.

He said according to law all whole wheat products must be 100 percent whole wheat.

He said there are some products, which are part whole wheat.

Mr. Chambers said according to law those products must contain between 33 and 50 percent whole wheat.

He said within the next three months, bakeries will place stickers with the correct ingredient on the package of all products.

Mr. Chambers said at the end of the three months bakeries are expected to have properly labeled package stating and correct range of ingredients.
