Building demolition on hold

The Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) may be forced to delay the planned demolition of a building at 14 Caledonia Avenue in Cross Roads, Kingston this weekend in order to acquire the necessary equipment.

This would mean a slight reprieve for the people who operate from the building.

The operators had until midnight to move out of the building, which was slated to be demolished tomorrow by the KSAC.

Town Clerk, Errol Greene now says it is unlikely that the demolition will begin tomorrow as scheduled.

He was speaking with The Gleaner/ Power 106 News Centre after meeting with occupants of building this morning to listen to their appeal for an extension of the period of notice to be relocated.

Following a five-year legal battle, the KSAC won the right to demolish the building, which was erected without permission.

However, the business operators claim that they were not aware of the case.

They also asked for more time to relocate their businesses some of which have been at the premises for more than 30 years.

In response to the request Mr. Green said while the KSAC understands the plight of the business operators the demolition must take place.
