Police reject reports of illegal search

The police high command is rejecting reports that a search was carried out at the home of attorney-at-law Carolyn Reid because of her connection with the case involving former head of the St. Catherine North Police division, Superintendent, Harry Daley.

Superintendent Daley is currently on corruption and extortion charges.

In a statement this afternoon, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mark Shields, said policemen had in fact entered a premises belonging to Ms Reid’s mother, but that this had been done in pursuit of possible suspects of a robbery.

He shared that on Friday, August 8, a robbery occurred in the vicinity of Windward Road, and the following day a police team together with members of the JDF, conducted a number of searches at specific premises where it was believed the suspects may have been found.

During the search a number of persons were pursued into premises occupied by Ms. Reid’s mother.

DCP Sheilds said the occupants were told that the police were pursuing suspects and entered the premises. He adds that the occupants made no complaints at the time.

He also stated that there is no evidence that the police operation had anything to do with Ms. Reid or her involvement in Superintendent Daley’s case.

DCP Sheilds also responded to allegations by Valerie Neita Robertson, another member of Superintendent Daley’s legal team, that her telephone has been illegally tapped by the police.

According to DCP Sheilds, Mrs. Neita Robertson has made no formal complaint to the police and that if such a complaint were made a thorough investigation would be conducted.

DCP Sheilds also voiced concerns of the police high command, that the allegations by the attorneys are part of a strategy to distract public attention and undermine the investigation into the criminal allegations with which Superintendent Daley is charged.
