The Jamaican government said the decision of some CARICOM countries to establish a political union could have implications for the structure and future of CARICOM.

The government said it would be requesting that the issue be brought for discussions at the highest level of CARICOM.

According to the government, Jamaica’s position on the political union will be evaluated based on that discussion.

The government said it has taken note of the joint declaration issued last week by the governments of a number of CARICOM countries.

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Manning and Grenada\'s Tillman Thomas are expected to meet in St. Kitts tomorrow.

They are expected to use the meeting to explain the integration initiative being attempted by Port of Spain and the OECS countries of Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia.

The leaders have already declared their intention to work towards economic integration by 2011 to be followed by political union two years later.

They are also expected to ratify a memorandum of understanding by year end, and are encouraging other Caricom nations to join the quest for closer union as well.
