Jamaica ended the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China this morning with a bronze medal in the women’s 4 by 400 metre relay final at the Bird’s Nest Stadium.

Unfortunately, the men’s team ran a disappointing race and finished at the back of the field.

The women’s quartet of Shericka Williams, Sheerefa Lloyd, Rosemarie Whyte and Novlene Williams clocked a season best 3.20.40 seconds for the bronze medal.

As a result of the bronze, Jamaica finished the Olympics in third place on the track and field medal table with a record-haul of 11 medals. This includes six gold, three silver and two bronze.

The gold medal went to the United States in a dramatic finish.

Russia looked set for gold after Anastasia Kapachinskaya opened up a gap over American Sanya Richards.

But in the straight the Jamaican-born Richards found an extra gear and sprinted past her rival to win in 3.18.54 seconds.
