Jamaican students who are currently studying in Cuba are to receive an increase in stipend from the government.

Addressing a special session of Parliament yesterday, Mr. Golding announced that Cabinet had approved a 25 percent increase for the Jamaican students.

The increase will now bring the stipend up to US$125 per month for each student.

Mr. Golding added that the decision was made in keeping with the promises he made to these students when he visited them in Cuba, in May.

Under the bilateral technical assistance agreements between Cuba and Jamaica, the Cuban government provides tuition, accommodation and course related supplies, plus the Cuban equivalent to 5 US dollars per month.
