Gusty Gustav - projections for Jamaica

Published:Thursday | August 28, 2008 | 9:00 AM

A Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch remain in effect for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Gustav begins its passage just north of the island.

This means that hurricane conditions still pose a possible threat, while tropical storm conditions are expected in 18 hours or less.

The met office said that at 10 p.m. last night, the centre of Tropical Storm Gustav was located about 85 miles north-northeast of Morant Point, Jamaica, or 100 miles south of Guantanamo, Cuba.

It said Gustav is moving towards the west-southwest at about 8 mph and a turn towards the west is expected later today.

Maximum sustained winds are nearly 45 mph, with higher gusts, and slow strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Tropical storm force winds extend up to 35 miles from the centre.

The met office is projecting that heavy rainfall will spread across the island today.

It said strong, gusty winds are likely to affect mainly northern parishes.

Storm surge flooding of 1 to 2 metres above normal tide levels is also likely along northern coastal areas.

Small craft operators, including fishers from the cays and banks, are advised to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and wind and sea conditions have returned to normal.
