Government to tackle transport corruption

Published:Tuesday | September 30, 2008 | 5:58 PM

Transport Minister, Mike Henry is reporting that new employees at the Island Traffic Authority are being threatened when they refuse to accept bribes.

Mr Henry said he is taking the issue very seriously, in light of the murder of Jamaica Urban Transit Company chairman, Douglas Chambers.

Mr Chambers, who was trying to eliminate corrupt practices at the state-run bus company, was killed in June.

Mr Henry said it has now become commonplace for Island Traffic Authority workers to collect bribes of $15,000to process vehicle documents.

Impending changes to the Road Traffic Act should help to halt this problem, he added.
