The Customs Department said it would be implementing several measures to deal with the expected inflow of goods during the upcoming Christmas season.

Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker said the department has already hired additional customs officers to meet the demands of the holiday season.

However, he is encouraging individuals to make their shipments early, as well as to check with the department to ensure that all documents have been received ahead of time.

Mr. Walker said discussions are continuing with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in an effort to lower customs duties.

He said high standard rates are among the factors that lead to corruption and tax evasion in the Customs Department.

In addition many importers refuse to pay the required rates and prefer to bribe customs officers to get goods cleared.

According to Mr. Walker reduced custom costs might improve the compliance rate.
