JPS to read metres on weekends

The Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, says it will begin reading meters on weekends as part of efforts to standardize its billing cycles.

The Company says its decision to read meters on Saturdays and Sundays is aimed at ensuring that each customer is billed for a maximum of 31 days each month.

This follows the recent billing of some customers for periods of up to 41 days.

The company claims the new measure should significantly minimize the possibility of any such recurrence.

The reading of meters on weekends is also expected to help to reduce the number of estimated bills customers receive.

The JPS says at present about 5 per cent of the bills sent to customers are estimated.

The company is advising customers that they are likely to see JPS’ meter readers in their communities any day of the week as a result of the new measure.

JPS is urging customers to play their part in ensuring that their meters are read, by facilitating the meter readers, and by relocating their meters when asked by the Company to do so.

Customers who have concerns about the legitimacy or conduct of the meter readers visiting their premises should ask for proper identification, or call the JPS 24-hour Customer Care Centre.
