The finance ministry is to meet with the Jamaica Teachers’ Association next week to decide on a payment method for outstanding sums owed to the association.
Minister without portfolio in the finance ministry, Senator Dwight Nelson, said while the government cannot afford the level of salary requested by the JTA, an increase will be granted.
The teachers’ had requested a 100 percent wage increase over a two-year period.
Mr. Nelson said he hopes an agreement will be arrived during next week’s meeting to pay the amount, which is immediately owed to them.
He said the government would also be paying an additional annual increment of $8 billion.
He said he wants a commitment from the JTA that the standard of the teaching profession will be improved.
