UNICEF applauds Jamaican Government
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has commended the government for measures it has implemented in an effort to curb violence against children.
UNICEF says it is particularly pleased with the establishment of the national task force on child protection.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding instructed the task force to immediately implement the short-term initiatives to deal with the problem.
Among the strategies to be implemented, is the establishment of a 3-digit emergency number that children in crisis can call and report abuse.
Cable providers will also be required to work with the police to display photographs and carry information on missing children.
Officer-in-Charge of UNICEF Country Office for Jamaica, Nada Marasovic, says the organization is optimistic that the concerted response by the government, child focused agencies and citizens will help to create a more protective environment for children.
Ms. Marasovic says the latest wave of attacks against children has been very disturbing.
Meanwhile, UNICEF wants Parliament to quickly adopt the National Plan of Action on an Integrated Response to Children and Violence.
Over 57 children have been murdered since the start of the year.
