UDC Board sacked
Prime Minister Bruce Golding has demanded the immediate resignation of the board of the Urban Development Corporation, (UDC), citing disappointment in the board’s performance.
Senior government sources say while some members of the board might be returned, the Prime Minister was disappointed with the level of infighting in the board and with its failure to deliver on several promises.
There are indications that other boards could be asked to resign as the prime minister is reportedly becoming impatient with the performance of several of them.
Efforts to contact UDC chairman Louis Williams have been unsuccessful, however, two other board members confirmed they were dismissed but refused to comment further.
The Gleaner/Power 106 news has learnt that 10 members of the board wrote to the Prime Minister indicating that they had lost confidence in Williams and were not prepared to work with him.
The Prime Minister summoned the board to a meeting at Jamaica House yesterday and after efforts to negotiate a settlement failed he instructed them to resign with immediate effect.
The Cabinet approved the UDC board shortly after the Jamaica Labour Party won the 2007 general elections.
