A section of the of the Retirement Landfill in Montego Bay, St James is now on fire following what the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) said is the work of arsonists.
Executive Director at the NSWMA, Joan Gordon Webley, said a protest by residents in the community is hampering the work of the agency’s team to put out the blaze.
Mrs. Gordon Webley claims that residents started the fire whose illegal electrical power was disconnected by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).
The PNP councillor for the Granville Division Michael Troupe is claiming that the JPS reneged on an agreement with the residents.
