The finance ministry and the Jamaica Teachers Association, JTA, last week reached an understanding on the wage increase to be offered to government paid teachers.

According to Senator Nelson the government has devised a plan and will do its best to find money to pay the teachers.

Meanwhile, the JTA has called a special delegates conference for Saturday to discuss and vote on the agreement reached with the finance ministry.

The understanding, if ratified by the delegates, will pave the way for a salary settlement for the teachers.

The teachers have been negotiating with government to have their salaries increased to 80 per cent of that paid to their colleagues in private institutions.

They also want the conclusion of negotiations for the 2008/2010-contract period.
