Heroes’ Day deaths

The police are reporting that at least six people were shot dead and another five killed in motor vehicle accidents yesterday as the country observed National Heroes Day.



Four of those shot dead were among patrons at the Double Diamond Nightclub on Washington Boulevard, where a Jamaica Defence Force soldier fired shots during a dispute involving a woman.



The soldier, who is said to have been drunk, also shot himself.



Around three hours later, a man identified as Omar Brown, 24, was shot and killed by a masked gunman at a yard in Morass District, Westmoreland.



Another shooting incident shortly before 2 p.m. claimed the life of 23 year old Patrick Pryce in Jones Town, Kingston 12.



Meanwhile, two elderly men were killed after being hit by a train and a car.



Robert Williams, 72, died after he was hit by a train in Porus Manchester yesterday morning.



Mr. Williams was reportedly attempting to cross a railroad in the vicinity of Hampton Road when he was hit by the train, which was travelling from Kirkvine to Port Esquivel.



Another man, who is said to be about 70 years old succumbed to injuries he received after he was mowed down by a car in May Pen Clarendon.



The man, known only as ‘Mr. Barnett’ from Denbigh was killed at a pedestrian crossing.



The driver of the motorcar did not stop.



The two motor vehicle accidents followed a fiery crash, which claimed the lives of the three students of the University of the West Indies.



The vehicle carrying the three students crashed into the Rio Nuevo bridge and caught fire.



Two persons were also injured in that crash.
