Tax department to introduce E-tax filing

The Tax Administration Department said it would be introducing the electronic filing of General Consumption Tax (GCT) returns to the public on November 17.

Currently business persons are able to pay GCT online but they are still required to physically submit the monthly returns at a Collectorate.

The department said the passage of the E-Transaction legislation last year has cleared the way for the acceptance of electronic signature, which is a critical element for the implementation of e-filing.

The tax authorities and FISCAL Services Limited are now working to implement the system to accept electronically filed returns on a phased basis.

The introduction of the electronic filing of GCT Returns is the first phase in the e-filing project.

Phase 2 of the project, which involves the electronic filing of PAYE and Corporate Income Tax Returns is scheduled for introduction in 2009.

The filing of other tax types is to be introduced at later dates.
